Black Swallowtail Butterfly Pictures
Papilio polyxenes
The Black Swallowtail butterfly is abundundant in much of the eastern United States, north into Canada, west through Colorado and southern California and south to northern South America. Their beautiful wings measure 3.25 - 4.25 inches across. They lay eggs on plants in the parsley family, but also sometimes citrus. They overwinter as pupae, with stages that vary dramatically in appearance. Interestingly, individuals in Manitoba and Saskatchewan interbreed regularly with their close relative Old World Swallowtails, creating dark offspring that were once thought to be a whole new species!
