Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly Pictures
Papilio troilus
The Spicebush Swallowtail is found throughout the eastern part of the United States, west to Colorado and Texas (though less common west of the Mississippi River), north to southern Canada, and south to Florida (but rare in the Keys). Wingspans range from 3.75" - 4.75". The early stages of catepillar looks like a bird dropping on a leaf - what a great way to hide from predators! Even cooler, the later stages develop spots that look like snake eyes. When disturbed, this caterpillar will extrudes two appendages on its head that looks like a snakes tongue (along with emitting a strong odor)!
