THE MICHOACAN REFORESTATION FUND


The Michoacan Reforestation Fund is a non-profit corporation which was incorporated in January of 1998. The goal of the Fund is to support forest ecosystem and habitat restoration programs in the State of Michoacan, Mexico. More specifically the objectives of the Fund are:

  1. to establish reforestation as a workable strategy for the long-term protection of threatened forest ecosystems and the wildlife that is dependent on such ecosystems,

  2. to help conserve ecosystems by creating alternative sites for extracting forest products for domestic use and income, and

  3. to assist the inhabitants of such forests in establishing a sustainable forest products industry.

Prior to and since the Fund's incorporation, its primary activities have been fund-raising and public information. The Fund is administered by Robert L. Small and is located at 260 Mather Street in Oakland, California. At present the members of the Board of Directors are D.J. Agnew, Gary W. Berlind, Dr. Lincoln P. Brower, Ed Rashin, and Bob Small. Dr. Brower is Research Professor of Biology at Sweet Briar College in Virginia and Distinguished Service Professor of Zoology Emeritus at the University of Florida. In addition to serving as a member of the Board of Directors, Dr. Brower serves as the Fund's Chief Scientific Advisor. Ed Rashin is a graduate forestry engineer. He is presently living in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacan and is very active in the activities of the La Cruz Habitat Protection Project.

An application for 501(c)(3) status has been made with the Internal Revenue Service. Once it is approved, it will be efffective as of January 16, 1998, the date of the Fund's incorporation.
