Helping the Monarchs And The People

How has it been possible in two years to plant over 47,000 oyamel and pine seedlings in the monarch overwintering areas of Michoacan? It has been made possible because almost 200 individuals from throughout the United States wanted to help the monarchs and the ejidatarios. These individuals have put loose change and dollar bills in a collection jar at a plant sale in North Carolina. Many have written checks from $5 to $200. Every dollar that has been contributed has gone to pay the cost of planting oyamel and pine seedlings.

It costs fifty cents to propagate a seedling, to transport it to the overwintering areas, and to work with the ejidatarios to plant it on their land. Every tree that is planted creates new forest and helps the monarch butterfly. Every seedling gives an ejidatario and his family hope for the future. A minimum contribution of $5 provides ten trees. Anything more than that plants more trees in the monarch overwintering areas.

If you want to help, there is a form which you can use to send your contribution to the Michoacan Reforestation Fund and the La Cruz Habitat Protection Project.
