Marbled White (Melanargia
galathea)
- Occurs throughout Europe, extending to North Africa and western temperate
Asia. Butterflies are in flight in summer and feed on flowers of thistles (Carduus
) and knapweeds (Centaurea). The yellowish green or pale brown
caterpillar has dark lines along the back and feeds on fescues (Festuca)
(1).
White Admiral (Ladoga
camilla)
- Found across Europe into temperate Asia and Japan. Upperside entirely
black and white, while underside is reddish brown and white. Pale blue on inner
margin of hindwing. Butterflies feed on flowers of bramble (Rubus).
The caterpillar is green on top and brown on the bottom, and has two rows of
brown spines on the back, with a brown spiny head. It feeds on honeysuckle (Lonicera
) (1).
Monarch (Danaus
plexippus)
- Found in eastern US to Mexico, western US, Hawaii, Indonesia, Australasia,
and the Canary Islands. It is one of the few migratory butterflies. The
caterpillar has tentacles behind the head, and black, yellow, and cream bands
on the body. It feeds on milkweeds (Asclepias) and related plants (1),
(2).
