The viceroy butterfly is often confused with the monarch butterfly. They are both in the Nymphalidae family, but they are in different subfamilies. The viceroy has a thin black band across the hindwing, which monarchs do not have. A viceroy's flight is faster and more erratic than the graceful Monarch. The viceroy does not migrate. But they both taste bitter to predators! The monarch gets its bitterness from milkweed (toxic cardiac glycosides) and the viceroy gets it from the salicylic acid of plants from the willow family. The caterpillars of the viceroy look nothing at all like the monarch.
