Question: How can I be sure the La Cruz Habitat Protection Project is creditable?

Answer: This is a key question. Here are two individuals, Jose Alvarez in Santa Clara del Cobre in Michoacan and Bob Small in Oakland, California, trying to raise money to start a project to protect the Monarch Butterfly and the habitats adjacent to Lake Patzcuaro and Lake Zirahuen. We believe the involvement and support of Dr. Brower and the University of Florida Foundation answers the question.

Question: Is it possible to visit Hacienda La Cruz and see the trees my contribution have made possible?

Answer: Yes. Anybody who is visiting Mexico and is planning on visiting Michoacan State is welcome at Hacienda La Cruz. They should contact Bob Small, who will arrange with Jose Alvarez for a visit.

On February 20, 1997, a tour group organized by Remarkable Journeys of Houston, Texas, visited Vivero Hacienda La Cruz. The tour was scheduled to go to the Monarch Sanctuaries the next day. Each member of the tour group was given an oyamel fir to plant during their visit...

Question: Who is Bob Small?

Answer: Bob Small has been involved in public policy and environmental issues for many years. In 1996, while on a trip to central Mexico and during a visit to Patzcuaro, he met Jose Alvarez and his family. He was able to visit Hacienda La Cruz and to see the nursery that Jose has created and is trying to maintain. Late last year, Bob was in Gainesville, Florida, where he met and worked with Lincoln Brower. The La Cruz Habitat Protection Project is his primary commitment.
