The Conservation of British Butterflies in Britain Past and Present is a wonderful resource for becoming familiar with conservation issues and strategies. John Feltwell takes a thorough look at the history and future of the conservation of butterflies and at current projects taking place. He stresses the importance of this research not only for the sake of the butterflies, but also because butterflies play a crucial role as environmental indicators of healthy, or unhealthy, ecosystems. The book also includes a nice collection of laws, or lack thereof, pertaining to butterfly trade, population status, and land set aside for their preservation.
John Feltwell does an excellent job at making this readable for both scientists and the general public by explaining all ecological terms. This book would potentially work well as a supplementary text for an introductory ecology or conservation biology class.
